INTRODUCTION

Plan by nature is a rational animal. It is the rationality of man that makes him to realize that he cannot survive in this world alone and that he has to live with others; thus as Plato said man is a social animal. It is because man is naturally social, that he lives in a society with his fellow men. Thinkers like Hobbes believed that mans life sustaining needs and passions for individuals dictate their interactions with each other. And with no governmental authority to settle disputes between individuals, each person acted as a sovereign that answers to no one but itself. Also, Locke claimed that most men are rational and can control their naturally passionate appetites without much outside restraints.

This selfishness of man, to his fellow man, his violence and uncertainty to life led the people to form a government that will fame the excesses of man, maintain law ad order and protect the people and their properties. In return, the people are to obey and follow the government the individuals have a role to play in the way they should be governed, but this is said to be limited depending on the type of government that is practiced. Some governments do not care about the people, rather they place them where they belong, for example in Machiavellis, the prince, he was of the view that a leader should not bother about his subjects or people, rather his main concern should be himself and his safety even if it means killing those he is governing. This is what is happening in sign recently. People like Rousseau was of the believe that good government must have freedom of all its citizens as its most fundamental objectives. However, some are of the view that government is not for the people. In so doing, that is why we have many types of government which are Democracy which is government for the people, Dictatorship being a government where a single individual gained power through force, Monarchy, a government where the king and queen rules others are theocracy, totalitarian, and republic. Some of this governments do not have any care for the people and the individuals do not have a say in the way they are being governed, rather, they follow the rule of the government whether it suits them or not.

In the process of the government I discovered that for a government to keep on existing, it must be sovereign, or have sovereignty, in the sense that it will be free from outside. This case that African Independent Movement took place in the 20th century. When a wave of struggles for independence in European-ruled African countries and territories were witnessed countries under the European rule were not free from the European government and as a result wanted to be free. That was the reason why Zik was genuinely committed to the achieving of decolonization and freedom for Africa.

This paper explains the Nnamdi Azikiwe’s notion of political autonomy in which I will be limiting myself to its practicability to the Nigerian development.

CHAPTER ONE/METHODOLOGICAL CONSIDERATION

1.1     Statement of the Problems

It is said that Nigeria is under the yoke of colonization, the individuals are still not free, because they are still under the strong hold of the colonial masters and thus Azikiwe advocated for political autonomy. But the problem in this idea of political autonomy is that to what extent can his idea of political autonomy help to bring Nigeria out of the problem of neo-colonialism.

It is a problem that Nigeria is under the yoke of colonization whether we are free or not, our citizens are not free, and also is the country both politically and economically.

1.2     Aims of Study

The aim of this study is to examine Nnamdi Azikiwe’s notion of political autonomy, other objectives are the role of political autonomy to the development of Nigeria.

1.3     Method of Study

The nature of this work being a philosophical research employs one single method. This research is not based on questionnaire; neither does it involve interviews nor a field work.

This work is based strictly on relevant library materials and internet sources other relevant materials from journals and magazines are also consulted where necessary to buttress our points. Generally, the methods employed in this study are expository and analytic.

1.4     Justification of Study

Based on the fact that Nigeria is an independent state, the power of governance is being manipulated and handled by some greedy few within the country and neo-colonized without the country. This work justifies that Nigeria is in dire need of political autonomy.

1.5     Significance of Study

This work is significant in the sense that if helps to contribute to the theoretical quest for freedom in Nigeria from those who believe that they own the power in the country as well as outside because in as much as we practice a Democratic system of government, power speculates within few people or groups of the same cabal; as well as practically liberating Nigeria from these blocs.

1.6     Scope of Study

This work is basically limited to the exposition and analysis of Nnamdi Azikiwe’s notion of political autonomy. But, I shall delve into their notion of political autonomy.

1.7     Organisation of Works

To achieve a successful completion of this work and also for clarity and understanding, this work is comprised of four chapters. Chapter one takes us through a subtitle background that serves as the theoretical geneology as this work. Chapter two exposes some relevant literature necessary to consolidate our view. Chapter three accesses other issues related to the subject of our study in this work. Finally chapter four looks at the evaluation of Azikiwe’s notion of looks at the evaluation of Azikiwe’s notion of political autonomy and its role to Nigeria development.
